About us
DRAFT — placeholder copy, not yet approved. Nothing on this page has been signed off by the directors and none of it should be quoted or shared.
Ability Beyond Vision is a new organisation in Bolton, run with and for blind and partially sighted people. We work on the everyday things that decide whether someone can take part: information you can actually read, events you can actually get to, and people who already know what to do before you have to explain it.
Our mission
Sight loss does not have to shrink a life. Most of what gets in the way is not the eye condition — it is a form nobody can fill in, a venue nobody described, a website that fights back, a room of well-meaning people who have never been shown what to do.
Our mission is to remove the avoidable barriers around sight loss, so that blind and partially sighted people can take part in ordinary life on the same terms as everyone else.
Ability Beyond Vision — draft mission statement
We do that in two directions at once. We work with blind and partially sighted people directly, and we work on the organisations, employers and venues around them, because that is where most barriers are built.
What we believe
- Nothing about us without us. Blind and partially sighted people lead this work, not just receive it.
- Accessible from the outset. Built in from the start, never bolted on afterwards and never charged for as an extra.
- Plain and honest. Clear language, clear costs, clear limits. If we cannot help, we say so and point you somewhere that can.
- Dignity over pity. We are not an inspiring story. We are people getting on with things, given a fair chance to.
- Transparent by default. How we are governed, what we spend and how we handle your information are all published in our trust centre.
What we do
-
Awareness sessions
Practical sessions for workplaces, schools and community groups on sight loss, sighted guiding and inclusive communication. Delivered by people with lived experience.
-
Accessible events
Events designed to be accessible from the outset — described, navigable, and planned with the access information published before anyone has to ask for it.
-
Support and signposting
Practical help and honest signposting for blind and partially sighted people, and for the family, friends and colleagues around them.
-
Accessibility reviews
Reviews of websites, documents and venues, tested by blind and partially sighted people rather than by an automated checker alone.

Being a small, new organisation is not a reason to be vague. We publish what we are doing, what it costs, and what we got wrong, in one place:
